Maker, Restorer
Harpsichords

For more than two decades I have been making harpsichords and clavichords for individuals and institutions across North America. My instruments are entirely custom made to suit my customer's needs and desires. The designs I use are drawn from antique instruments of proven musical value; the materials I use and the methods I use to make my harpsichords are the very best I have been able to find. My harpsichords are remarkably close to the originals, especially with respect to the sound they produce and the feel of the action. I am also very concerned about the musical and functional utility of the harpsichords I make. So while they are historically accurate, they are also easy to live with. My harpsichords are entirely made by hand; I use no kits or kit parts.

Harpsichords

We build harpsichords since 1981mainly after historical instruments by old Flemish school, typically the Ruckers and Couchet family . Flemish harpsichords have special tone characters: poweful and long lasting bass, brilliant treble and so on. We hope you enjoy the sound of our harpsichords. They are really great.

Harpsichords, Early Music

Matthew James Redsell owns CONTINUO, but it could easily be the other way around. He started his music training at an early age on the piano and through amazing luck ended up at the Unversity of Toronto. After some five years there and no degree he decided to build harpsichords. Harpsichord making was an immediate success and he completed about 80 of them before getting retiring from the city to spend his time developing CONTINUO in the resort country of the Fingerlakes in New York..Continuo has been around for sometime. It all began about 1975 when he decided to publish a newsletter, well one thing lead to another and here we are today some 20 years later still wondering where it will all lead. The name for CONTINUO came from one our first editors "Jan Goodman".

Lautenwerk, Harpsichords

Steven Sorli, apprentice of Frank Hubbard, has been making harpsichords since 1971. He now specializes in Lautenwerk or lute-harpsichords and Theorbenflugel, a lautenwerk with 16' stop. Single manual models feature a sliding keyboard and action to vary tone color. Three models contain both lute-strung choirs and metal-strung choirs, providing the best of both in one instrument.

Maker
Fortepianos, Harpsichords, Clavichords

My greatest pleasure comes from being able to make, for professional musicians and serious amateurs alike, harpsichords, clavichords, violins, violas da gamba, and fortepianos which inspire, energize, and excite both players and listeners. To accomplish this end, I am always looking for ways to increase the quality of the sound, feel, playability, and appearance of my instruments. Anything that makes my instruments more like the antique instruments is how I define quality. Over the years, I have found that applying all that I have learned to the building of my instruments requires me to spend more time and energy on each instrument. This, naturally, limits the number of instruments which I can now build each year to roughly the equivalent of three or four harpsichords per year.

Fortepianos

MARGARET HOOD FORTEPIANOS specializes in instruments based on Viennese fortepianos of the early 19th century by Nannette Streicher: a 5 1/2 octave, 1803, and a 6 1/2 octave, 1816. Streicher was the daughter of J.A.Stein, whose pianos delighted Mozart. She continued his business in Vienna and it became the pre-eminent firm of its time, supplying pianos to Beethoven and counting all the major musicians as customers. These pianos have a bold clear tone, light touch, and a variety of color which is the prominent feature of Viennese pianos. We occasionally offer restored Viennese grands of mid-century, and have available a Fortepiano Maintenance Handbook, for owners and technicians dealing with modern reproduction fortepianos.

Maker
Clavichords, Virginals

Three years ago, I had a major epiphany. I suddenly realized that instrument making is a wonderful blend of woodworking, music, art, and science. To that end I built a (crude) unfretted clavichord. Right away, I built two more which were a LOT better than the first one. I then built a spinet harpsichord after Hitchcock and a generic Italian virginal, based on general descriptions of such instruments. John Phillips evaluated the spinet, and told me to make some corrections, mainly dealing with the action. After making these changes, I took the spinet to MusicSources to offer it for sale. Laurette Goldberg, at MusicSources, had a technician do a final voicing, and she then sold it. My first sale! At this point, I'm building two more spinets, so as to know one instrument before moving on to others. I plan to build the virginal after Perticis, as well as other small early keyboard instruments.

Yes, I'm a new builder. As such, I'm on an incredible learning curve. I'm making the transition from furniture making to instrument making, and, if I say so myself, it's going very well.
