Keyboard Kits

To make a keyboard you need a key blank (or individual boards covering the width of one octave each), key rails, balance and guide pins, key covers (available in this folder), and a keyboard layout, which traditionally is drawn right onto the key blank.

Key Blanks - is a wood panel from which the keys are cut (see below). It is usually made of linden, bass wood, a hardwood like alder, or true fir or spruce. Specify wood. Alder works well for clavichord keyboards, which are often carved. We keep bass wood and alder in stock. Other woods require an extra fee, please inquire.
Boards for Key Blanks - Individual boards the width of one octave or 1/2 octave, depending on availability, covering the area of one key blank.
Key Rails - consisting of balance rail and back or front rail (both made of hardwood like eastern maple—see below), and side rails made of a softwood.
Key Pins - see the pin folder.
Key Layout - often comes with the plan for the instrument. A couple of layouts are available in the plan folder.
Instructions on Making a Keyboard - forthcoming.
