Deer Skin
Deer skin includes the outer smooth layer of skin.
1771/3 Soft Deer Skin—as used in the garment industry, chemically tanned by contemporary methods. We select prime grade with a fine grain. This tan leather stretches in only one direction. It is suitable for the top layer on hammerheads over one or several layers of firmer kid skin (goat skin).
17731 Special Deer Skin - stretched and specially treated deer skin by a proprietary method, which removes most of the stretch and gives the skin a firmer consistency similar to that of vegetable tanned skin.
17735 Vegetable Tanned Deer Skin—tanned by an age old method. This would be the type of leather used in fortepianos of the early 18th century or earlier. Forthcoming.
Soft Deer Skin
The packages of random deer skin pieces contain several pieces from near the edge of a skin and from areas of the skin we deem not prime quality, useful for padding mechanical action parts like knee levers etc. The 1/2 square foot and larger pieces are selected for prime consistency. They may have one or two irregular edges. The skin is generally thinner near the irregular edges. Larger pieces (1 sq ft minimum) include parts of the skin from the edge to the center. Whole skins may be ordered. They range from 7 to 10 square feet. Soft deer skin is about 1.5 to 1.8 mm thick. The stretched skin is a little thinner, approximately 1.2 to 1.3 mm.
