Large Unfretted
Clavichord Plan
This plan was the basis of a kit produced by B&G Instrument Workshop in the 1970s. It is a full sized plan for a large German unfretted clavichord by the maker Haas. The plan was drawn up by Ken Bakemann.
This plan is for an unfretted double strung German clavichord with a range of five octaves FF to f. It is double strung throughout most of its range, with a third string at 4' pitch for the lowest 20 notes. The scale permits it to be strung in brass for the 8' strings at modern pitch; some of the 4' strings need to be strung in iron though if the pitch is to be modern A440. The scale allows the instrument to be strung entirely in brass at modern pitch. The instrument has a width of 68, a depth of 21 and a height (without legs) of 7; key spacing is 6 1/4 per octave.
The plan consists of a main scale drawing and a scale elevation and a keyboard layout, as well as a couple of construction details.
